Category: accessible Devices
Could someone post with a comparison of these 2 products? Now that talks is available for a vzw phone, I'm curious.
Price?
Differences in applications?
Does one tend to freeze more than the other?
I'm also curious, will the screen readers read whats is on my sd card? Like if I have music stored on there, therefore using my phone as my mp3 player.
Thank you, I look forward to your replies.
Is that supposed to be real? I mean, I thought talks could only run on simbian phones, but the Moto q9c is a windows mobile device? I'm confused as to how that works.
Yes, talks 4 is now available for the moto q9c. VZW and talks have gotten together. Verizon is releasing the moto q9c with talks on it.
At this time, it seems the moto q9c is the only windows mobile device that talks works on. Hopefully that'll change in the near future.
I've used both Talks and MS but on different devices (both Nokia devices running Symbian though). I've found very little difference, usability wise, between the two. My Mobilespeak was less prone to crashing (not that Talks crashed much, may be once every two weeks or so), but you have to keep in mind that it could be differences in stability of the underlying device or OS, even if it was the same OS I can't swear to it being the same version, so comparing the two is very difficult unless you've run them on an identical device.
As far as I know the differences are pretty minor functionality wise, at least with Symbian, that being said I not tried the latest offersing from either.
I'd be curious to hear from people who used windows Mobile.
I also understand that MS offers braille support but I am not sur about Talks, having a Bluetooth 12-cell braille display with the phone would be really neat, can't afford one at the moment but it definitely goes on my AT wish list.
I actually have both talks and MSP on a Nokia n82. I am licensed for MSP but wanted to do this exact thing. I found the following. Both are quite stable and each only crashed the phone once. MSP crashed when I was moving through a list of Items I think it was either the main standby screen or the verbosity settings. Pulling the battery out and putting it back in allowed it to recover and it hasn't happened again. Talks crashed when I was using the blue tooth headset. I was trying to move through the menus and it just froze. AGain, pulling the battery recovered the crash. I would say both are equally responsive. At first glance it seems like talks is more responsive however when moving quickly through a list of items such as the home screen talks may say number 6 but its at the fifth item. There is a delay function to slow the response and when I got it to where it seemed accurate for quick movements it was the same as MSP. Talks is a little more verbose as far as identifying items as folders. When moving through the menu talks will say tools folder where mobile speak will not identify it as a folder and just say tools. MSP is able to read the menu while in a call. Example if you want to put a call on hold, mute, or other functions the Nokia TTS will do the reading. Talks is silent at this point and I don't know why. Back to bluetooth. Msp is rather sluggish when trying to move through screens using the BT headset. Talks is pretty quick. Talks has application specific settings and MSP does not. Talks claims to work with quick word and to the best of my knowledge although I haven't tried it MSP does not. So what does this boil down too? It's little things that distinguish each product. Both will serve well and do a good job. YOu need to look at the finer points. Also, Talks has there sim card licensing and MSP is tied to the particular phone.
Ahh, the point of msp being tied to a particular phone, is not one I thought of. So, if I had a moto q for a while and decided I didn't like it, switched to the treo, I'd need to buy another msp?
Hopefully, some CDMA folks will respond. No other carrier has pulled me away from verizon yet.
hmmm. this sounds like a good topic for me. I'm using the both with my symbian nokia n70 and I personally like talks much than ms. my reasons are as followes.
1. ms sucks the batary for me in a short duration. rather talks isn't.
2. talks got automated caller announcement as it's additional feature but ms has not introduced that feature yet to my knowledge.
3. the latest ms versions are not supporting the elequence tts.
4. I don't like the synthesisers (voice) of ms.
5. As per India, ms costs more than talks.
hmmmm.... this is what I can remember as of now.
Raaj.
INteresting thoughts. Never saw the battery life problem. Cost, well in the us I think they are the same. One thing is MSP has never charged for updages and I have had it for over 4 years. The windows version of msp offers user centered licensing so that if you have a windows based phone and want to change you can transerfer your liscense as many times as you want from phone to phone. This is something I hope they evemtually offer in the symbian version.
Hey all, will talks or mobile speak read what is on a sd card? Music artist and title? I'm hoping so, it helps me accept the price better...lol! If I can use my phone as a mp3 player, then that is more bang for my buck, yes? *smile*
Accessible phone
accessible alarm clock
accessible music player
Seems worth it then! When all is said and done, I'm still paying around $250.
Thanks everybody!
Does any one know if on an sibian based phone if both talks and mobile speak will work with way finder access? or will I be forced to use mobile geo if using mobile speak?
wayfinder works with talks, yes.
Also, while in a call and using talks, you can un-mute talks so as to scroll through menus, read phone numbers, etc.
I haven't used MS, but am very pleased with talks thus far.
One thing though is that Talks has virtually nonexistent tech suport whereas the folks at Code Factory are always here to hel if you have any problems with Mobile Speak.
I have a question, I clicked on the link for getting mobile speak via the att guys and saw something about a license transfer for $99. What is this about? I thought the cool thing about mobile speak, was you could transfer it from phone to phone no problem. Using it one phone at a time of course.
As far as the good deal via Verizon, a friend cautioned me to make sure it was a full version of talks. He said the deal via AT&T cellular was a watered down version of mobile speak?
I'm not sure. First, I need to get a phone. I'm seeing both motorola q9c and palm treo 700w on craigslist and ebay.
Yeah i know way finder works with talks was wondering if wayfinder works with mobile speak though?
Well I got Mobile Speak through AT&T ad it doesn't seem watered down to me. I was a talks user for about two years but then around Christmas last year my mom and I got word that in May of this year our service provider would no longer exist because AT&T was buying them out. Unfortunately neither of our phones were supported anymore so we had to get new ones. We ended up with Smartphones, which at the time weren't compatible with Talks. And it was nice to get away from Eloquence. I do use it with Window-Eyes, but it's the British version and to be honest I wouldn't use it at all if it weren't for its fast response time.
No. Wayfinder is used with symbian phones not smart phones. It also only works with talks.... so yeah. I think you can transfer liscense, but you have to pay is my assumption.
K thanks. ATT is offering Mobile Speak for sibian and Smart Phones for $89 but no point in going with it if it doesn't work with wayfinder.
Polka dots and Moonbeams if someone has answered your question about msp than I don't mean to bee repetive. No, you can move the lisens from one windows moble device to another. I personal have done this many of times.
btw i have varified that wafinder access does work with both talks and mobile speak symbian. So now i just have to try out MS to see if its worth the $89 that i can get it from att for. Anyone know how to unmute talks during acall btw>?
I am using the 30 day demo of mobilespeak on an ATT e71X and am happy with it so far. I tried the demo of talks but have found that MS seems to work better when internet browsing. Both screen readers let me navigate menus and do basic functions. MS also works with the built in web feeds which is a handy way to subscribe to rss news and podcasts. tHe one bad thing about the ATT phone is it doesn't come with an office program. If anyone can point me to a basic text editing program that runs on symbion third adition that will let me do things like take notes in class I'd appreciate it.
how are you liking the keyboard on that phoneroman battle mask? i am thinking of switching to it myself
I definitely like Mobile Speak better than Talks. Now if I could just figure out how the hell to lock the keypad on my Motorola Q so I wouldn't find myself in the menus each time I carried the thing in my pocket I'd have it made. And for the record Left Soft plus Star doesn't seem to work, at least not on mine.
bryan P to lock the key pad on the Motorola Q/Q9c do the following: 1. hold down the home button. You should here Mobile Speak say," Quick list dialogue" then scroll to I think it's lock or device lock, and press enter or ok can't exactly remember. For all you Motorola Q/Q9C users who need help, let me know. And I like Mobile speak, just that there is a lag with certain TTS voices. I do, how ever wish that they had the eloquence voice; I am use to taht voice then the dec talk voice. Have never used talks.
or you could just press the home key and then space
and to unlock is left sof key then star. hope tha thelps
The Lil Dark Piggy, which voices seem to lag? I was thinking of choosing Acapela Heather if I go for all of this. *smile*
The Acapella voices tend to lag . I just use the one that comes with it by the default, which is Decktalk. Have never tried any of the other voices like Lequendo and stuff like that.
Loquendo also lags. I tried it when I first got the Q.
I had a chance to try Mobile Speak with the E71X. (Talks wouldn't even install for some reason). MS worked pretty well, except that it wouldn't read past the first few words of text messages.
What version of Talks/MS did you try to install on the E71?
I got Talks running on the E71X. I was trying to install 4.0, and I needed 4.00.3. Both Talks and Mobile Speak seem to work well on the E71X.
I can say the same for the nokia 6650 both talks and mobile speak work great on it.
